I am a 24-year-old college graduate with a degree in nursing. A long time veteran of TV obsession, I have been nuts about a great many TV couples over the years.
The concept of the TV romance appeals to me, especially, because of the very nature of a series. It is the only format that truly has enough time to take a set of characters and develop them fully.
Television love stories are particularly compelling because of the fact that we, the viewers, are given the opportunity to watch as the relationship between two characters evolves, organically, over time. We get to observe the natural progression. How they meet. How the relationship goes through changes (subtle or dramatic) until it makes perfect sense that these two, one time strangers, would develop feelings for one another.
In many ways, it's as though we are seeing it through their eyes. Abridged, of course, but it still gives you the illusion that time is passing, just as it is for them.
Thus, when we finally arrive at the end, the pay-off is so much sweeter because it is as if we lived the story with them.
Max and Lorelai are the most recent of my favorite TV couples. Others I have followed, over the years have included:
My worship is not indiscriminate, don't get me wrong. Some of the pairings, above, I was drawn to, instantly and others took time. The ones that linger on in my mind, however, were the ones that I never expected would come to pass. Those that caught me off guard with their sincerity and the overwhelming sense that something undeniable and powerful was happening. Until the moment that I realized, in each case, that this was going to be something special. Something that would live with me forever and shape the image in my head of what love really should be.
